Let's Fall In Love

There is a classic song with lyrics something like this:  Let's fall in love. Why shouldn't we fall in love. Now is the time for it. Let's take a chance. Let's fall in love. (Forgive my laziness but this is a blog and I don't feel like doing research this morning. If you do, feel free to let me know correct title, recording artist, etc. and I will pass that on.)

There is nothing quite like falling in love and the nature of the relationship need not define the experience. Falling in love is not limited to sexual relationships. I thought I loved my granddaughter before she was born - and I did. However, when I held her for the first time, I was a goner - head over heals in love with that little being. It was the same with her little brother when he came into our lives. When I encounter a person that will become an intimate friend, I fall in love. I am completely enamored by that person and willingly seek opportunities to get to know them. It feels as though there are not enough hours in the day to explore and learn everything I can. Of course the experience is intensified in the most fun and sensual ways if the person becomes a lover.

Falling in love lowers my defenses and invites me to lead with my heart and to open my mind to new possibilities. When it endures past the early stage, which is often called infatuation, it can last a lifetime and it can survive time, distance, and life challenges.

A precious friend, a sister of my heart and soul, is a sweet example. When I met her in the year immediately after divorce changed my life, we bonded easily and quickly. My life shifted again and I moved across the country and we have only seen each other twice in the past 18 years. She called me not long ago needing love and support for herself and her son. He was having a medical crisis and time was not on their side. The details don't matter. Time and distance melted away and our love was deeper than ever; our understanding was mutual, as was our ability to communicate. Divine Love intervened in the week that followed and her son's needs are being met. I love this woman and she loves me. It is one of the joys of my life.

Falling in love with life opens doors for joy as well as wonderful and expansive experiences with people and with the world we inhabit. Care to join me?

Let's fall in love!
