As Freedom Emerges

I am grateful for the clear and ongoing guidance I am receiving from medical authorities as glimpses of personal freedom begin to peek out from behind the clouds of this past year. A close friend made this comment when told I had received the first dose of protection against COVID:  "Thank you for being willing to contribute to herd immunity." It had not occurred to me that I was doing that and I didn't know how to respond. She reminded me of the importance of that and I realized she was sincere. I wasn't just doing it for myself; I was contributing to the welfare of others.

I know quite a few people who will refuse the shots and it is, after all, a matter of personal choice. Some will do so because of their past experience with flu shots and others have conditions that don't allow them to receive the shots. Those who believe the entire past year has been a lie or hoax will continue refusing to accept any medical guidance or opportunities for preventative treatment. I may not agree with all of them but I understand where they are coming from and I choose not to judge. We live in a country that allows us the personal freedom to choose and I am not willing to give that up.

What matters to me now is how does receiving Moderna affect my everyday life? What is it now safe for me to do and will I feel comfortable with my emerging freedom? Many years ago I learned the liberation of living in the moment, one day at a time. I smile when I type that phrase "one day at a time." Most of have heard this countless times in our lives from a multitude of sources. That is because it rings true and it is a most powerful way to live whether there is a pandemic or not!

I will begin each day as I have done for over forty years. Meditation comes first, even before my first cup of coffee. As I emerge from the stillness of meditation, my Inner Voice begins to ask God, the Universe, the Voice of All That Is "What shall I do today? Show me." That is my most powerful thought every day. "Show me." One of the gifts of this gentle practice, a gift unexpected, is the ability to flow more easily when something I plan is overruled by a need I had no clue would arise. It may be a personal need or the need of a loved one. Either way the need takes precedence over the plan.

This process is more important to me now that personal freedom is emerging slowly. Isolation has shown me that people are infinitely more important than schedules, finishing a novel, or seeing a tv show I really like (I no longer record for later viewing so when it's gone, it's gone). Yes, there are times when I say I am not available until another time or day. I am very clear of the need to take care of myself so that I have the energy to give fully. I also am looking for opportunities to have fun and that requires energy too! The day will come when a friend can come over for a backyard visit that provides safe distancing as well as the opportunity for love and laughter.
